  • ABTA’s Travel Trends for 2025 report indicates a rising trend in long-haul travel, with a significant increase in visitors to Asia, Africa, and Oceania.
  • The report also highlights the popularity of ‘baecations’ and five-star stays among travelers, particularly Gen-Z.

The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has released its Travel Trends for 2025 report, which predicts significant changes in travel preferences and behaviors. The report suggests that more than a third of people plan to explore long-haul locations outside of Europe and North America, marking an increase from 28.2% last year to 34.2%.

Asia is expected to witness the most significant rise in visitors, with approximately one in 10 people planning to travel there in the coming year, a surge from 8.9% the previous year. Top Asian destinations include Japan, Thailand, India, and China. Africa and Oceania are also predicted to see a substantial rise in visitors, with 7% and 6%, respectively, the latter primarily influenced by plans to travel to Australia.

The 2025 travel trends also indicate an increasing preference for ‘baecations’, as more people travel with their partners. This trend has risen from 40% to 44% in the past year. Interestingly, this trend extends to parents as well, with 29% indulging in a ‘baecation’ in the past 12 months, a marked increase from 21% last year.

Luxury travel is another trend that ABTA predicts will dominate in 2025, particularly amongst the Gen Z demographic. More than one in five Gen Z travelers plan to spend more on their holidays to upgrade their accommodation. This is a significant increase compared to 14% of Millennials, 11% of Baby Boomers, and 8% of Gen X.

The report was released at ABTA’s annual Travel Trends conference on 26 November 2024, featuring various speakers’ industry insights. Graeme Buck, ABTA’s Director of Communications, emphasized the role of ABTA travel agents and tour operators in helping travelers turn their plans into their ideal break, providing necessary guidance and support along the way.

Overall, ABTA’s Travel Trends for 2025 report highlights an adventurous spirit among travelers who seek new experiences, luxury stays, and intimate journeys with their partners. As such, the hotel and travel industry should adapt to meet these evolving demands and preferences.
